March 2008

brian-goal.jpgLast night 5 people participated in our first polo match of the season. Kep, Kirk and Dave were destroyed by Brian and Jody who moved the ball around as if they were born riding bicycles with polo mallets (The picture is of one of their many goals). Moving the ball around the court, passing and shooting were all difficult from a bicycle but everyones skills improved throughout the evening. Around 7:00 the weather turned and we decided the next goal would take all (even though Jody and Brian were well ahead). The teams battled for awhile until Kep and Kirk were lucky and scored, winning the first ever Ark Valley Velo polo match. See some of the action below.

Not much riding in Buena Vista or Salida at the moment because it is buried under our above average snowpack so we hosted our first club ride in Pueblo. Under sunny skies and 56 degree temps (18 degrees and 4″ of new snow in BV when we left) we had a great day riding around Pueblo Reservoir. We did a 20 mile loop on a the Voodoo trail and I think everyone was pretty beat at the end of the day.

March 5th we had our first public meeting to introduce Ark Valley Velo to the community. and we had a great turnout!

Drew introduced the club and its mission…

Keith spoke about advocacy; Safe Routes to School, youth bicycle safety rodeos, bicycle lanes, and Bicycle Friendly Community certification. Items that are very important to the club and part of the mission statement.

Earl outlined some possible special events, Gentlemans’ Classic, Cup Race to Salida and trail cleanups…

Kirk introduced the social benefits: group rides, skills clinics, bike polo and pot lucks.

Kep talked about next weeks trip to Fruita: See the forums for more information
